This is the first painting by Keith Townshend that we have posted which isn't a seascape albeit that it still has a sea theme. This wooden dingy which has seen better days nontheless has a warmth and romantic apeal as a symbol of laconic days spent at the beach.

This painting features Lake Taupo. The center of New Zealand's North Island is dominated by three volcanoes and New Zealand's largest lake, Lake Taupo. Lake Taupo was formed by a series of at least five volcanic explosions spanning 27,000 years, and with the most recent having been in 186A.D.

Auckland's west coast beaches have a reputation for being wild. Exposed to the winds coming off the Tasman Sea, the beaches often experience wild weather resulting in high surf. The sands are black iron sands.

Thanks to the generosity of a friend, Keith Townshend gets to stay and enjoy the beauty and peace of Shelly Beach which provides Keith with ample inspiration and material for more of his signature seascapes.
